May 24 - To Brown Ridge!

Brown Ridge Hike (4 km+) - Saturday, May 24
Rendez-vous at 1 pm
At the Mount Warburton Pike summit parking lot.

Bring water (1 litre is not too much...) and a lunch or snack.
Hiking shoes or good walking shoes are a must.
This is a two-hour hike (about 4 km return), plus picnic and photo time...
The weather forecast looks very promising for Saturday, bring sunblock!

The hike will start at the summit parking lot of Mount Warburton Pike (end of Staples Road). Please try to carpool, to reduce traffic on the dirt road to the summit. We will hike about 2 km along one of the many goat paths near the tree line on Brown Ridge, choose a good picnic site and enjoy a break, then return to the cars along the path.

Along the way, we'll enjoy spectacular viewpoints of the Campbell Farm and Saturna Island Vineyards below, and in the distance, of the other Gulf islands (Pender, Mayne, Saltspring, etc.), the San Juan islands in the US, and Vancouver island - and we will take the time to enjoy them. We may also see several eagles and other birds of prey, as well as the feral goats of Saturna, which keep the ridge so closely cropped... almost like a golf green, and have created a maze of paths all over this side of the island.

See you this Saturday, at 1 pm!

Factoid: Mount Warburton Pike is named after pioneer, explorer and author Warburton Mayer Pike (1861-1915), who owned land on Saturna. He was also engaged in mining activities in the Cassiar district. Click here for a more detailed account of his life on Saturna, and here for another brief bio.
