Hike Report: This was our first hike of the season, and we picked a sunny day. Perfect for a walk to Narvaez Bay. A trio of women, a young man and a dog ventured down the road to the bay, checking the orchard along the way...

Along the way, we had a very interesting conversation...and discovered a rough-skinned newt on the path. It seemed headed for the tall grass on the side of the path, so after looking at it very closely, topside and underside, we put him back on his way...
Above: Rough Skinned-Newt (Taricha granulosa)
If you are interested, here is another webpage on rough-skinned newts, with some great pictures of their defensive position, with curled tail and raised head - as a warning to predators. Cool.

Its belly is a flashy orange. This one seemed very relaxed. Probably looking for a warm place to spend the colder months.
And finally, here is a "caterpillar flower". Exotic, don't you think?
Saturday's walk was a lovely couple of hours to the shoreline, and return. With picnic at the shore, of course. Next week's destination will also be an easy one, maximum 2 hours, so stay tuned, it will be published on Wednesday, on this blog and at the stores.
